If you are having trouble paying your monthly rent and/or utility bills because of the COVID pandemic, Nevada has created the CARES Housing Assistance Program to help.

How to Qualify


Who is eligible?
Eligibility includes, but is not limited to those renters who experienced a job loss, reduced hours, or reduced wages as a result of the pandemic. There are income restrictions based on the county in which you live.

Rural Counties Emergency Rental Assistance Program
Priority Assistance - Households with incomes at or below 50% of the area median and households in which one or more members have been unemployed for 90 days or longer will be given priority assistance.

Clark County
Who is eligible?
You have to apply to find out whether or not you are eligible for assistance. To start the application process, click here.

What documentation will I need to complete my application?
1. Photo identification
2. Proof of household members (lease or other documents)
3. For assistance with rent: Fully executed, current lease with name of household member requesting assistance
4. For assistance with utilities: Copy of utility bill with name of household member requesting assistance
5. Documentation supporting claims of negative impact of COVID. May include:

  • Job loss

  • Reduced hours

  • Employment furlough

  • Reduced income due to loss of business revenue


6. Documentation to prove the negative financial impact of COVID. May include:

  • Proof of unemployment benefits (application of any status whether approved, denied, or pending)

  • Pay stubs before and after the pandemic to prove loss of income

Washoe County
Who is eligible?
Any county resident who has experienced a negative financial impact due to the COVID pandemic and who is having trouble paying their rent. COVID related income loss may include job loss, reduced hours, furlough from job, or reduced income because of loss of business income.

Priority assistance is given to households whose income is at or below 50% of the area median and that has one or more household members who have been unemployed for 90 days or longer.

1 person - 50%: $27,900 80%: $44,600
2 persons - 50%: $31,850 80%: $51,000
3 persons - 50%: $35,850 80%: $57,350
4 persons - 50%: $39,800 80%: $63,700
5 persons - 50%: $43,000 80%: $68,800
6 persons - 50%: $46,200 80%: $73,900
7 persons - 50%: $49,400 80%: $79,000
8 persons - 50%: $52,550 80%: $84,100

How do I apply?
To begin the application process, click here. After you have submitted your application, representatives will send you a letter in the mail requesting documentation that supports your application. Once the documentation is received, you will be mailed notifications. If approved, the program will pay past due rent directly to your landlord. Future rent will be paid based on need.

All Other Counties
Who is eligible?
1. You must be a resident of one of the following counties: Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, White Pine.
2. You must have experienced a job loss or reduced income because of the COVID pandemic.
3. You must owe past due rent or believe you are going to fall behind in the future.

Priority assistance is given to those households whose income is at or below 50% of the area median and/or those households with one or more members who have been unemployed for 90 days or longer.

Funds may only be used to pay rent, late fees, and utilities. Renters can receive up to 12 months of assistance: nine months of past due rent and three months of future rent.

FAQ


I used my savings to pay rent. Will the program reimburse me?
No. the program does not reimburse renters for payments already made.

I’ve worked out a repayment plan with my landlord. Do I still need to apply?
You might if you meet all the other eligibility requirements.

Is an eviction notice a requirement for eligibility?
No, but you will need verification of past due amounts owed by means of a rent ledger or a landlord statement.
