What to know before you apply for a Section 8 or public housing waitlist.
Each week we publish a roundup of every Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV), Public Housing, and Project-Based Voucher (PBV) waiting list that is scheduled to open in the United States during the coming week. Each entry includes the housing authority's name, location, program type, opening date, application link, and any notes from the authority itself.
A new roundup is published every Monday morning covering that week's openings (Monday through Sunday). We source directly from housing authority data and update our announcements as soon as new openings are detected.
Often no. Many Section 8 and public housing waiting lists accept applications from residents of other states — you can apply and, if awarded a voucher, port it to your local area. However, some lists give preference to local residents or restrict to local applicants only. Always check the individual authority's notes before applying.
Housing authorities typically receive thousands of applications per opening, sometimes within hours. Many lists close at a preset application cap (e.g., the first 500 applicants). This is why we recommend applying on the first day an opening accepts applications.
